The loss of a language is a lot more than just the loss of words. It is also the loss of identity, spirituality, cultural knowledge and values. Using a variety of state-of-the-art animation techniques, Wunungu Awara brings Indigenous Australian stories and languages to life.
Wunungu Awara began in 2007 as a collaboration between Indigenous Australian communities and our team of animators to aid in the preservation of endangered language and knowledge.
Working on the premise that Indigenous Australian communities already have the infrastructure to preserve their language and knowledge through intergenerational learning, Wunungu Awara supports this existing system by using animation as a tool to re-engage and revitalise interest in language continuation, by reconnecting language and its people, and to assist in the preservation of cultural knowledge.
Language preservation by Indigenous Australian communities reinforces Indigenous rights in protecting their cultural and intellectual property, through the preservation and archiving of history, knowledge, songs, and performance contained within their language.
